A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

scripts and scriptures

proverbs in halcyon skies

we read the lettering

as if floats clumsily by

the Bible torn open at its rib

there are words

in the veins of existence

that hold a future

at bay, like Cain's love for Abel

or Adam's trust of Eve

but we do breathe

and walk slowly toward

some gate of imagination

hoping it is real.

I've read this one a few times now, the imagery is very compelling. I think a gate of imagination is necessary for human progress in some regard, or the right carrot to dangle on a stick, but the gate that might have provided progress and innovation for a certain time period, might have actually proved to be a hindrance in following centuries, depending on your perspective. I think most scriptures written at their respective times were a written embodiment of the collective unconscious at the time, forged into text in an inexact but still meaningful way, such that they can transcend time without being dragged down by detail. But in that lack of detail, misinterpretation (either purposeful or accidental) abounds, and therein lies the rub, and so many of earth's conflicts over time

Yes, misinterpretation...too much of that for sure.
thank you, Jon,

And should we find the gate hanging from its' hinges, what then? --- This is an excellent poem, full of things to think about and self-reflection, too. Two thumbs up from me, Jacob.

thank you, JE...
I will fix those hinges straight away.
I suppose paradise is what you make it but a promise of paradise will only lead to disappointment, and or you will never get there. I think the most precious thing given to us is life not an afterlife as some sort of reward for having lived. Nice stimulating write J.

yes, and we need to make the most of it.

I think Cain's love for Abel and Adam's trust for Eve weren't quite it. But I believe in a love greater than that and I can feel it in my bones. The provebs are thousands of years old and they're after all just tired words now. But the promise of eternal love is renewed everyday.

A beautifully written poem, dear Jacob and one on which I could go on thinking for pages and pages.

I appreciate your pondering of this one, divya.
Many feel the need of something to believe in.. read more
Those who know aren't talking. The rest of us cannot comprehend there being nothing more. For there to be nothing beyond this life would be the greatest tragedy of all.

yes, it would...if this were just it.

Those who believe believe and those who don't don't but that doesn't mean one or the other is correct...faith is about believing what you believe. It can be anything at all or it can be nothing. I choose to believe there is more to life than this one existence. What else is to come, I will wait and see. Very cool Jacob

Interesting biblical look, Jacob. And forgive me: I have read a good few of your poems, but had little time to leave comments. I'm still here, and enjoying your material.

I believe in something, I just don't know what that something is. Still, it's not bad going for a former atheist/agnostic or insert name of choice. I've went from not believing in the beard guy in the cloud to thinking surely humans aren't the pinnacle of anything. I'd much rather believe the penguins are secretly in charge of everything and are quietly playing a blinder in fooling us all.
But don't take advice from me. I wanted to join the debating team until someone talked me out of it 😊
Good to see your writerations survived your recent health scare intact my friend.

Is there any point in adding it was a she? 😊
Cain's love of Abel and Adam's trust of Eve. Oh, if only it were so! Think of all the future unpleasantness that might have been avoided. Don't get me started on that damned snake.
