the cult hero

the cult hero

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the cult hero

the barfly

met the swatter

he wrote poems

and left blood

on the bar stool

scrawled wings

torn,

disfigured faces

a web of entitlement

page one

the disclaimer

page two

i didn't get that far

and the beer

has left bruises

in my throat

coughing up a black and blue

foam

and the urge

to superimpose

all over his book

watch his inebriated poems

stumble into ignominy

Oh, the disgrace of it all...perhaps he'd have been better off remaining in anonymity and writing under a nom de plume. I don't think I'd go as far as King when he gave Richard Bachman a fake "about the author" biography, though. I've never wanted or courted fame, myself. But I always loved being on stage and hearing applause for my performances (I used to play and sing quite a bit in my youth). But it was just a fun hobby. My poetry, I take very seriously but I don't take myself seriously. Those are two different concepts. I am dedicated to my craft but I try to keep it separated from my ego. After all, a critic's opinion is only an opinion and different strokes for different folks and all that. But if someone wants to wax abusive, I don't tolerate that sort of behavior and I don't think others should either. Your work is excellent as always and I enjoyed the read, F.

"and the beer
has left bruises
in my throat,"

poor inebriated poet and artist, broken from life, and the drink.
He has reached rock bottom, but his soul still desires to sing.
I think we all understand him.
We don't want to be him, but all understand him,
whether we would like to admit it or not.

You are an amazing writer. I'm so glad that you are back, and I know everyone else on this site is happy to have you back as well.
No one can fill your shoes. They are too big,
100.

I send you much love, and I hope that you are doing well, and are feeling much better.

You are welcome. I hope you are doing better.
Jacob I read this and all I could think of was the idea of writing in general
And how writers lost their strength
Drunk on life they lost their pen
And with that all that was worth reading was lost too

I really like this idea for the poem...thank you, Precious.

I thought he had some interesting pieces. I wasn't certain this was about him, but the other reviews suggest otherwise. Perhaps I just haven't read enough.

I would think not. Perhaps in their own mind they feel exempt from right and wrong.

I think not getting to page two of a book says enough about its quality in the readers mind. How anyone can write poems while inebriated is quite surprising. Clarity of mind is needed at the best of times. I sense the dislike for the poet's words here. It's all a matter of taste, though. A rough beer to one may be a chardonnay to another. I sense more of a cult than a hero, too.

You don’t like him J, do you? It’s got to be a he. Bukowski fits the bill. He may have had a cult following. He was still a bum.
