A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

a rendering

artists/poets

portraits/biographies

enlightenment/illumination

within the lines

without the lines

canvas/verse

paint and ink dry in unison

age turns the artists/poets

gray

in future captions

under photos

in books

about

artists/poets

we paint painters into our memory

we write poets in like fashion

contributions from muted voices

stilled hands

grave markers denote

those who connoted

the devoted

artists/poets

of centuries past

and of present

maybe future captions

will have our names

or maybe

when the paint and ink dry

we will disappear like a block of ice

set out in the sun...

I think Donald Hall once voiced the opinion that we all will be forgotten. That would seem to concur with the last lines of this one. It's really impossible to say. I recall a critic saying "Invictus" was the best known "bad" poem. Well, the critic has been forgotten, but "Invictus" lives on.

and we might live on, at least through our writing.
thank you, John,

Put me in the shade so I don't melt quite so fast. But please, no ice picks.
Nice one, Jacob!

You have dedicated your life to poetry. You have taught many, many students and you will be remembered my friend. Your work will be read long after you are gone. I also live in hope that my grandchildren and great grandchildren will read some of Nanny’s scribbles.

Thank you for your kind review, lightsong,

We'll never know or maybe we will. The uncertainty is troubling sometimes. Reading your poems after a while. Felt great.

Whether names are immortalized in captions or vanish in thin air, a poet has lived under the sun and done his job with utmost sincerity of the heart. And the universe has felt him and celebrated him. An amazing poem.

no need for notoriety...although some do feel that need...maybe they sell out because of it.

Well, all I can say is you left an indelible mark on me over the years! If you really ponder a poem from a "master" you can almost see the ink blots from the previous master that, that... maestro had read, absorbed, and experienced before. When we are lucky and I mean really lucky some of those ink blots come flowing thru our pens too:) will you and I be remembered... who knows but I will wager that one or two of our scrawls will make its way down the lines of poetic posterity perhaps thru one of your pupils my old friend
