A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

there's a reason

I dipped my quill
in poison waters
so as to be the dead poet
finally getting everyone's attention

the dead don't lie
they just write into some realm
where the real poetry
is funded by the likes
of Sylvia, and Emily, and Lawrence
and Allen and so many others

who spoke real
lines we could feel
lines that moved others to action
not contraction

toss away text messages
and read from those who have lived
and panicked and cried
and loved
and understood the worst
evidence

of demise
exhume the writings
find the cause
of apathetic distrust

could we all move mountains if we tried
or are we simply tied
to crossing over slight hills
that fail in accomplishing anything
including

astute observations
as to why no one is paying attention.

"I dreamed of him last night, I saw his face". Ah, yes, that dead poet. As for your ref. to Sylvia (I assume Plath), I must get back to her; do have a small book of her stuff, including, of course, "Daddy" (I read that aloud recently as a poetry gathering, and tried an American accent, which was necessary, so practised beforehand - probably awful!). As for your poem, loved this one. Thanks, J.
