on the rocks

on the rocks

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

on the rocks

famous people
want for nothing
live free then die early
in the evening of their existence

as time no longer wanes
it rushes to curb celebrity
shorter lives, longer drinks
cars in pieces
lives in shreds
Paparazzi like sharks
scavenge on bleeding careers

famous people
succumb
to fame
like a wrestler pinned to a mat

headlines of tragedy
gone too soon
then forgotten before the next name
appears as yet another fallen star

famous people
would rather be transparent
drink alone
keep secret that extra olive
in their martinis...

So many of them write from pain and from addiction and some can’t write without either and believe it’s the secret to their success, Janis Joplin, Amy Whinehouse, Jim Morrison, Curt Cobain and the countless others so much potential lost but leaving behind some of the best music ever created. This write just brings it all back and makes me pull out their music and reminisce.

A writer can only hope his or her work has some effect...thank you, Patricia.

Amy, I thought of Amy Whitehouse an incredible talent on a pathway to an inevitable early death. There have been so many abd their lives have been cut short from the fast lane. Like a comet they flashed bright and burned out quickly. Fab work dear J.

Long time since I was "famous" - just a little within a city (Coventry, UK) and county (Warwickshire) while broadcasting on the local radio station (Mercia Sound) - but not sure whether I liked drinking alone. Well, did enjoy drinking, I guess (still do). Whatever, I have enjoyed reading this. I'll read it again - maybe with a drink! You may buy me a martini!

thank you for your kind review, Pat,

I think the drug culture is big in Hollywood. Many succumb to pressures and egos and drift off into whatever drug or drink that may be. I recall when Chris Farley died. He wanted to go out like his hero John Belushi. He suffered a horrible death. Drugs, melodramas, and drinking don't go together too well. Not even for those stars of the fifties, sixties and up.
