the beat cops

arrested the beat poet

for faulty form

lackadaisical rhythm

wanted him to do time

for the crime,

of lack of rhyme

cops pinned cuff

links on the poet's

wrists

then filed a suit

for wrongful death of tradition

tied up in court

the beat poet confessed

free verse was confined

to iambic prison

the warden was a balladeer

spoke in a five-beat voice

the other beat poets protested

free verse, free verse, free verse

and they did it

in perfect form

rhyme and all.
