November's Axis

November's Axis

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

November's Axis

a cold, bold storm

white soldiers cover the field

flaky swords, bitter guns

something itching to get inside

to barrage the castle that is home

our sentries guard

shutters, storm windows

lawn gnomes, small but dangerous

a cold, bold storm

an eloquent defense

a picket fence

a cat in a blanket

Winter's a formidable foe

but my summer is in my heart

and in the worst northern wind

I have no need of a coat

red or otherwise.

Well you know I love it and the gnomes…my peeps, take care of them and stay out of the way of this weather, it’s angry and dangerous and always keep that summer heart!

thank you, Patricia, I shall try to do that,

I enjoyed the read. I certainly hope the home defenses hold. We are winter warriors in this house as well. My tact is to hide under a blanket fort (I have some of the softest plush blankets) until my wife brings me coffee. The garden gnomes may hold off the frost giants yet so long as we keep summer in our hearts. My heart's always warm around this time of year. I'm looking forward to food, friends and family. Those are some of my favorite gifts.

Nothing like food, friends and family....I still have two out of three.

Such a use of words and metaphors. The cold and the freezing heart bringing out such beauty. and rich with present meaning.
Incidentally I go see the ante bellum wars when I read this, quite clearly.

mmmmmmm ... yes! we keep heart don't we jacob!? and that winter cold and wind are formidable indeed .. we do what we can to batten the hatches .. i fear this year we have given the wind the ability to drain our coiffeurs too, adding to it's weaponry ... the price of fossil fuels sky high and all... i confess, my brother, i do need a coat .. and long johns and heavy socks .. and our "winter" is nothing like yours :) closing line is such a surprise line says i! .. it's seems kind of snuck in there .. like Benedict Arnold ... and pierces the flesh .. luv ya bro!

and luv ya back, my poetic friend.

At war with the red coats? No need for war with the red coats anymore. Felt like I was taken back to the Revolutionary War. And how much they must have dreamed of the sun in the winter of their death.

interesting perspective, thank you, Bill.

This was perfectly described with brilliant metaphors to make the winter seem even colder. ‘Winters a formidable foe, but summer is in my heart’ what an incredibly, passionate and strong line so many can relate to. I love the wintry colors of this poem too and how the images come to life, especially with the red. I find this piece of yours to be particularly strong with amazing lines. It feels like a war between a man trying to protect his home from the coming winter, and it’s absolutely genius and a great read. Thank you so much for sharing this piece, it’s perfect for the winter!

thank you for your kind review, Colacat.

Old age is winter, but youth and summer are carried in the heart. They keep you warm. The memories keep you warm.

I am unsure of the significance of the coat being red. Maybe that refers to memories of violence. Not everything in our youth was love and flowers, there was the spilling of blood too.

Thought provoking write J.
