Just Weeds there Now

Just Weeds there Now

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Just Weeds there Now

flower

flower children

flower power

flower flurry

flower's message

she loves me

no wait

Please don't tear the wings off that flower

flower

flower's leaning

another flower accepts

flower children

flower power

flower flurry

flowers for Algernon

flowers wilting

flowers dead and buried

the sixties went away

now just empty pots

scourged gardens

no beads

no need

the movement's roots

got uprooted,

flower

flower children

flower power

flower forgotten

the sixties went away

i think i have one pressed in a book of poetry

a Poulin anthology of the Beats

flower power lives within

many are flowers dead and buried

but i still feel the flurry

i'll never forget

flowers are too beautiful

not to remember.

My parent's formative years were the sixties. Even now, some half a century later I can see the influence of that time in the way they are.

I remember from many years ago, a story my father told my sister and I, about the first time he took my mother home to meet his parents. He told me that mum, (fully made up for the occasion,) was dressed, (almost,) in a suede mini skirt and pretty much see through puffed sleeve blouse and that grandpa looked at her as if she were some kind of alien.

It's a fun story, but I can just imagine grandpa's culture shock, on his introduction to a world that had so quickly become very different from the dun and drab of the fifties.

Hope you never forget those flowers.

Beccy.
