starting a brush fire

starting a brush fire

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

starting a brush fire

write me blind,

fingers search for the key

to your memory

feeling their way through years of tears

and more than one October's

leaf of grief

seasons turn

as you turned on me

i couldn't see your heart

through the deafening foliage

i could only hear your bitter bonfire

of vanity's inception

the blue tipped flames

stinging with cold reserve

as i went up in your smoke

and you were arrested

for burning hearts

when the tears had dried up

and

an order of restraint

issued.

i have an extra box of them somewhere, if you need a few...thanks, Michael.

I think you capture the essence of the ones our minds have difficulty letting go of perfectly here Jacob. It resonates with me the times things came to an end for one before the other knew anything about it. Eradicated by flames touch, like a bad memory, before we wake to find their status changed to single again... Or worse, "it's complicated"
Your last line speaks to me of the restraining order being locked out of there life without chance to reply, leaving the memories stagnant in the mind with nowhere to escape to.
I do admit I may be personalising your thoughts too much here, but will admit my first thought on completing your words was "what a b***h" 😀

I absolutely like your uncertainty, I think it demands an answer.

thank you, Gandre,

IT's hard, some people can offer such understanding, such patience and willingness to help and show love. IT can be exhausting for those people too, the ones who invest themselves in others and try to heal their grief in order to reach their heart. Some hearts are just unreachable and we end up torched as a result. I loved the images I have of someone being caught in a beautiful blizzard, with orange and red leaves blowing in the wind, but it became too dangerous. The blue tipped flames threw me too, and then I understood how cold it all was. I so enjoyed reading this Jacob.

Our love so often blinds us to reality. How much hurt could we avoid if like the signs of the seasons changing we could read the signs of dying love. Not have to watch the fires that were once a burning love become the dying embers that turn to ashes and then are gone.

Take care - Dave

I always wondered in relationships if the signs were staring at me, but I never noticed till the end game, and that was usually when the fire was out. Maybe that is why guys are slow in the uptake, or just blind to feelings. But when the burn comes, it comes in volcano form killing everything in its wake.

Pleasure, Jacob.
wow, j. you seem to have had some torrid relationships, are they the same person , or are they many and varied, whatever they were, keep getting lost in love, it makes for some damn fine poetry

not many, but varied, yes...thank you for your words, gram...
October ... the month that marks the beginning of the end of the halcyon days of summer ... that time that can produce a chill in the bones and one in the heart.
One can see love in the seasons ... Spring, the hopeful beginning ... Summer, the warm days and, hopefully, the hot nights of exploration, the melding of heart and soul ... Autumn, when the fever cools and we are caught in the reality that love may not last until the last leaf has hit the ground ... Winter, and all the heartaches gather for their reunion.

A good write, j. very good.

Despite appreciating your always-inventive metaphors & wordplay, this time it's your core msg that comes across as powerful & haunting, bowling over reader with unwelcome recognition! *sigh!* Fondly, Margie
