as we wrote it

as we wrote it

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

as we wrote it

summer of '67

the backseat expunged adolescent urges

and her hair smelled of heaven

at least a 17-year old's version

the grass was so green

it seemed envious of something---

maybe us

love flourishes in early years

even if it only lasts a season

but life has its reason

and endings are just portals to beginnings

and in fall

we find more reasons

to interpret the poetry of seasons

past

enlightened versions of ourselves

reach old age

immersed in memory

diving into days ago

now sitting in the front seat alone

but still smelling heaven

in our minds, and with our words

we'll always remain

in

the summer of '67

our forever version

of heaven.

'Windy' from the association.
Ode to Billy Joe
Incense and peppermints...just some of the songs that bring me back in time.

I was too young for driving but I do remember the crush I had. It's funny how youth can pop up in weird ways to remind you of the best times of your life. Each time I walk by the cemetery on the next block I remember the girls from my youth.

Nice one, Jacob.

Wonderful memories of a never to be forgotten year. The thrill of young love. So new and exciting. There must have been something special about 67. That was my time too. Last year at school before college. It's good to find heaven for a while. Many don't.love this write Jacob. Took me back to sweet sixteen.

You are welcome my friend.
Indeed it is natural to look back and reminisce. especially when we feel alone or unfulfilled. As always you take the words and describe the scene and the emotions so well Jacob.

Well crafted poem, nostalgia is a great thing, I think we all remember that last summer, before the life police came looking for us,

Great writing, Jacob. So much thinking and insight that we are there with the protagonist although this story isn't our own.

The perfect summer...young...alive...new adventures around every corner.
I'm sure there were bad moments as well, as we adjusted to our role in the world, but we tend to remember the good times more than the bad I think.
And now, more than a half century has passed and somewhere deep inside that young man still lurks longing to smell heaven in his mind.

A good write, j. Fond memories.

yes, we try to remember the good rather than the bad, but there were both, as you say.

Always felt the day someone told me to sign this document and become an adult it sort of killed off adolescence. Now that I'm an adult I'm trying to unsign all those documents. Summer of 67 should be made law, cos those were the good times. But as long as we can still remember it, then all is still good in the world.
