How it is...

How it is...

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

How it is...

New York streets are just different

the vibe is city-er than most

the concrete harder, but shines with graffiti poems

when the Moon peeks through the high-rise skies

and the skyscraper's eyes

the walk and the talk are like no other

attitude waits at the crosswalk

with glares and stares

and solemn oaths to find country

the thoughts shuffle along

echoing to themselves

conversations solo

striding into Soho

and Greenwich Village

to pillage inspiration

to write, spite or take flight

in elevator shoes

spreading the blues

with cigarette butts smoked to the burn of fingers

hopscotch minds pontificate

to a crowd not listening

they all have their own reasons for being there

for finding solace in the bottom of a bottle of ilk

and circumstance

New York streets are just different

even the silence is wary

the alleys fear themselves

as the dark night, the somber night

is a razor's edge of insanity

but when the daylight once again

shows its brilliant face

illuminated skies cry tears of joy

and the bustling rovers

with red faces and carefree incentive

come over...

as the street games

begin again.

I've never been to New York, but you certainly brought New York to me. Quite a place and although I was born in the city of London, I find that I have now have been converted to country ways. I have no desire to experience the mad rush and twenty four seven of the city. Happy to watch it from afar in the movies, but that is as close as I want to be. The city at night has its own ambience, its own stories of hardship and forgotten people. They are all a part of the whole. Excellent poetry Jacob.

so true, andrew...no two are the same.
thank you,

And how it is to be here, too? I was a newbie in this site 6 years ago...with my active hands and fingers putting down my thoughts and emotions into the screen. I had different groups of readers and I was an active reader, too. Now, this place seems to be quiet. My friends were not really gone, but they were not as active as before, just like me.
Sorry for relating this into WC, since I haven't seen yet NY city and its busy streets. One day, maybe.
Thanks for sharing this.

I can feel this great city holds a special place in the mind and heart of the poet fueling his passions and invoking his desires. The connection is tangible and powerful. The meanings of it all can not close a chapter but resurfaces in due times. Thank you sir Jacob for your wonderful.writes. You inspire.

Wow! You are welcome anywhere.
NY has always held a great fascination for me starting back in 74 when my wife spent a summer there completing her nurses training in pediatrics at CPH. Every other weekend I'd go down and we'd roam the streets, ride the subway and generally hit a lot of places in Manhattan . . . including the Village. Loved watching the taxi battles the flooded streets at Columbus Circle during a thunder storm. Felt the safest riding the subway uptown at 1:30 AM . . . cars filled with young revelers after a night on the town. NY was very dirty town then . . . Times Square a real hole in the wall with the porn shows and shops . . . went there only once! Been in the city several times since . . . but that first 3 months was the best . . . newly married, young and full of romantic fancifulness. Driving in on the GW Bridge in my Pinto with the worn tires, swallowed whole by all the passing trucks. Once went in by bus into the scary haunts of the Port Authority where as a returning GI from Europe was kicked in the foot by a cop who told me not to fall asleep in this place. Ahh . . . NY that talked about town . . .

My goodness.... I got a really good feel for the city in this spoken-word song of tribute that is brimming with the five senses, and as many emotions and states of reality. Night or day, the city is a chalice of potent brew.

Your writing, especially the hopscotch minds pontificating to people who are not listening, is a psychedelic treat!!!
