the most important meal of the day

the most important meal of the day

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the most important meal of the day

napkin notes on the kitchen table

leftovers of us

packed in suitcases

goodbyes only refrigerate for three days

before going bad,

but your love's expiration date

picked up the pen

the day i bought it.

now i am using that napkin

to wipe away the mess

my eyes made.

The first stanza even as an allegory paints the exit picture. People do leave notes on napkins. And the eat by date is an acute observation that one cannot wallow forever and must find some way to move forward or at least past the pain. So writing is the protagonists salvation as he uses it to bleed out.

thank you for your insights, John,

Wherever we look, we will find leftovers of when they were us. Even that napkins sight would give it a serrated edge to cut us once more. I recently stumbled on some from years ago, where I thought they meant too much to yhrow away, so hid them in a cupboard. When rediscovered, they sucked out all the oxygen from the room. They never lose their potency or sharpness.

Ouch, there is much pain here Jacob. Napkin notes on the kitchen table, a killer of a goodbye and then that third stanza. The start of the aftermath. Red hot tears.
