no make-up forthcoming

no make-up forthcoming

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

no make-up forthcoming

fragrant suffering,

sachet filled with scented tears

she waits by the vanity

stares for him in her mirrored gloom

she wants to doll herself up for someone

and he is her reason,

eyeliner runs like a tributary

from an ocean of grief

and she knows he will never return

no matter what shade of lipstick

she stores in the hope chest

that is her aching heart.

I sense parallel meaning in this seemingly allegorical piece. It seems on the face of it to be literal but then it appears metaphorical. As always you pull top drawer terms and phrases out of the hat and set the little grey cells alight. Love 'a tributary from an ocean of grief.'

the fact you have crafted this fine bit o poetry from the vantage point of a voyeur maybe.. oh how I love that word.. makes the whole experience seem more than somewhat sad but also sullied somehow.. maybe one of my favourites yet sir... N

The word "make-up" (great word choice) has an intriguing double meaning & so your message is thought-provoking. I can feel a sense of futility here as if trying to "pretty up" her situation won't get her very far *sigh!* Fondly, Margie

aww so sad, but she still had pride if she is sitting by her vanity unit ... hope she will soon dry those tears and buy new lipstick for someone else to kiss
