digging you in the early seventies and later

digging you in the early seventies and later

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

digging you in the early seventies and later

we lay upon the ego of youth

our love would never cease to amaze

even us,

your newly blond escape from red

my surprise that your touch felt the same

and the walks in the fall between high rises

holding hands in class with poets we admired

the kinship of words, shades of bell bottom tans

scorching prayers at night

when professors slept on tomorrow's lectures...

you were the perfect grifter

and i the eligible prey

you had that flared look i couldn't resist

and i didn't care your intentions

wore you like a favorite flannel shirt

with button down yearning

and when the amazement died

the surprise surprised itself

and my heart became an instant relic

something to be dug up on site

years later in my dreams.

This is awesome! Sorry I've been sketchy & not catching your postings lately. This is one of the best (to my liking) especially becuz you tell a more straightforward story than usual (I'm not good at catching nuances). I can picture the college scene you describe, as well as the jilted feelings you dig up (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Many of this poet's works seem to center on lost love, and this one has that same quality, with a heavy dose of betrayal thrown in. It begins with a description of college age love, with all of the giddiness that implies, with the sharing not only of feelings, but also interests such as poetry. The fashions of the 70's play a large part here, the "flared look," bell bottoms and flannel shirts all mentioned, probably as a metaphor for the other person's superficiality. The next to last stanza is a heartbreaker, the line "and my heart became an instant relic," a measure of the speaker's disillusionment. Well, that's the way it was, and probably still is for the young. I went through love in the 70's myself. Well done.

There is often a certain gratification in reminiscing--as long as we don't remember things exactly as they occurred. On the other hand, perhaps we couldn't do that, even if we tried.
Compelling work!

Digging you. I can remember that expression from the seventies Jacob. A trip down memory lane. You brought back some great fashion memories. My flares, they were very wide at the bottom indeed lol.

My era for 'growing'; did the bell bottoms, flares, button down shirts, even tank tops!
But the feelings then and now seem so, so difficult to comprehend. This one sent me back in photographic gasps for air and made me think and wonder if it all happened at all?
