flip sides and dark sides

flip sides and dark sides

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

flip sides and dark sides

shallow harmonies

discordant natures mature

into orchestrated immunity to love

the original instruments mate

then play notes of regretful insolence

music that gamboled from the grooves

in youth

now reaches vinyl conclusion

with the scratches all too evident

as the turntable winds down

the tunes want to be memorized

and remembered forever

but only a warped sense of serenity

leaves its cold needle

stuck in a heart

skipping across a black surface

a melody of a lost night

that keeps playing over and over

as an old song

that lost its words

in an echo of silence.

Your ability to say such melancholy things and make them beautiful is outstanding! The allegory of love lost and regret scratching at the bark you are the master of.

thank you for your kind words, John,

I like this. It is not easy to use an extended metaphor, and here we find one that delicatly expands a theme without repeats, always putting new things into the idea. So all those who like good writes should look how this has been put together !

Definitely, the A-side.
A brilliant metaphorical rendition.
Shooting up the poetic charts--with a bullet!

Literate and lovely use of words. I can almost hear the crackles of an old album.

sometimes I think our life is one long musical seen only on some off, off, way off Broadway theater... a place where the music is all B sided, scratchy, and played over and over until the needle finally refuses to set down on the vinyl.... and the cast is mainly a monologue with past ghosts, wispy filaments that have blurry faces, and fly overhead...

Jacob, your poem can be the script....

you make me want to find that old Temptation's album, the one that had the song "My Girl" in it.... the album I gave away when we split up... as well as Vanilla Fudges' "You Keep Me Hanging On" (long version)… but this just shows how much I enjoy this poem.....

love the temps...couldn't stand Vanilla Fudge though....ha ha.
Really good imagery, I could experience it as both a room and an emotion.

Im hoping your just on holiday and surrounded by so much love and endearment that you are finding the feelings of words there instead of here. We are missing you but no worries, keeping your seat warm :)
