prayer books and diplomas

prayer books and diplomas

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

prayer books and diplomas

you were my sensuous Alma mater

schooled me in matters intended

for confessional repercussion

i gladly sinned in your classroom

repeated courses

knelt by the desk to be absolved

prayed for one more close call

at midnight

grounding seemed insignificant

you were the only lesson

i cared to study

and when graduation came

my cap and gown disheveled

my smile still slightly perplexed

but my heart proud of its degree.

and despite the many errors of ways still success was near and was reachable that is the beauty of this life

yes, it is, sette...life with all its flaws is beautiful to live.
Despite all the carryings on with your Alma mater, the confessions, the disheveled cap and gown, you achieved. Maybe both in love and scholarly activity. No wonder you were proud.
