A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

plastic attributes

tulips bursting through the white blanket

bare trees seem confused

the buds lie in wait

frozen to their wits end

intelligence is a blade of grass

leaning toward a cold sun

demoralized by the trick

when will the green serene scene

paint itself into our lives

we are artists with pallets contrived

to a tepid scam of sorts

i so want those flowers

to be real.

Awesome originality as you paint an icy scene of disappointment that we are all grumbling about this year. You’ve pegged it, with confused vegetation, despite native intelligence trying to follow the bright spot. My favorite line: “when will the green serene scene paint itself into our lives” . . . I guess we’re indefinitely “on hold”! *sigh!* Fondly, Margie

My wife,( a botanist) has two main hates - artificial grass and plastic flowers. I hate grey concrete yards and weeding. Sometimes compromise has its own beauty, even if it is superficial. Perceived reality is eventually in the mind, Jacob, as we poets and your poem well demonstrates.

lol, i actually do have plastic flowers in tubs in my garden where nothing will grow under overhanging trees... they look beautiful all year round , even in the middle of winter :)

Me too Jacob, the visuals are so clean and clear in this one. The snow, the clinging winter, the cloying air with nothing breathing, nothing alive to give us the anticipation, even a longing of warmth and beautiful spring after a long sleep.

thank you for yours Jacob :D
Should i have laughed at the end of that?! Those plastic things are one of my few hates! Your mind swings in such glorious ways, jacob.. you notice the ordinary extraordinary, make fun of it in such fine phrases and even end with a near prayer!!! Know it's too each one's own but, even a pot of grass has more shaded coyness in certain light; turn over a blade or few - look at their sensous spines; notice everything green as green a thousand tones and think.. alive, breathing! Your words are so real.. :)

Timely piece, J. My first thought as I finished reading this poem was I'm "green" with envy... of others who see and touch true green, golds, blues, reds, etc. I miss the south and her love.

I wish you taught a course in writing, "metaphorically speaking" could be the title. Love this, J.

the wanting is normal, we crave things to be perfect
like that couple so in love on tv
plastic is beautiful to look at maybe but it will never be real
and it will never make you feel as you are meant to feel
tulips are my fave by the way, such beautiful flowers, the prettiest of all in my opinion
and I really like your poem
