I was a Project Supervisor at a night shelter for the homeless for ten years and saw many a lifetime stored in a backpack... Great share my friend- love this format ... :-)

A lot of "sidewalk suitcases" are garbage bags.
Pretty much defines the homeless: hearts that have surrendered hope.
Powerful piece!

Having personally experienced a stint of homelessness meself, albeit a mild form of homelessness compared to some -this captured perfectly to me the utter loss of hope. A state with no concept of future and certainly no sense of belonging. Add to the a feeling of intense guilt to which one cannot even attribute a wrongdoing or cause.

From the S in your sidewalk to the E in your hope, you just said it all jacob... For many, many years I ran a clinic at our then local 'Night Shelter & Soup Kitchen' which is now known as 'The Hope Centre'.. I have always believed most strongly that no-one sets out in life with the intention of becoming homeless, addicted to anything, or to suffer with any form of mental health problem, but of course they do and for many, many reasons often beyond their control... I also believe that with the right support and intervention/s many such individuals will eventually be helped out from the gutter/curb and commence or even re-commence making worthwhile contributions to society.................A great write indeed jacob.........Neville

Short and sweet....or not so sweet as the case may be. It's a shame when the heart surrenders hope. Perhaps I am too optimistic. I believe there is always a shred of hope. Lydi**
