Another Poem that Looks like You

Another Poem that Looks like You

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Another Poem that Looks like You

you  pose with your hundred poems

and long haired demeanor

fill space with an accountant's dream

of tax exempt words

subsidies of gratuitous writing

a figure developed in sums of years

of scattered thoughts, and recent photos

a block of ideas that could fill several houses

in several states of mind

a refugee allowed to live in this country

with your poem books as passport

even though you are from here,

you are alien to the grief of others

mingling is not your style

you close your shutters

so others' light is kept foreign to your own

it must be hard to see those photos

in the dark

isolation of one prolific mind

constantly binding its belongings

and posting so many "for sale"

signs on the pages of your lawns

that you forget how many feelings

you actually own.

Well this is so sad.. it's truly too bad that one can't just be true to oneself and by extension the art that comes forth in them.. still, are you really surprised that some end up selling out? I venture to say that this is less likely in the world of writing than say film or music where it's all about looks and mass sales, and as a musician I'm still insulted that a woman can't be a musician in this world without being drop-dead gorgeous, stick thin and sexually provocative and still not necessarily possess vocal chops worth anything. Books are about mass sales too, but the writing has to be good.. so usually these individuals are at least smart.. Yet, as we all know, sometimes the most intelligent, most talented writers are truly broken individuals (thus, their excellence in writing great stories and words) and their brokenness that built their art transcends the page.. too many artists are indeed "look at me, look at me" instead of contributing to a greater dialogue.

agreed. Well said!
I'm not sure if my reading of your poem has anything to do with your intent, but your sardonic diatribe reminds me of those writers who are so immersed in the gyrations of turning their art into money & fame, their participation on this website makes the rest of us feel like props for a grander scheme! The last line really hits home . . . writing is best when based on authentic feelings, think I! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Was my pleasure and you are welcome my friend.
You appear to be deeply disappointed at something you don't see in another--and what you do see is hardly encouraging.
Amazing work, Jacob!

My pleasure to read your work.
I'm always shaking my head, wondering what it is about your writing that makes such an indelible impression upon me. If I ever find out, and the operative word here is "if", I'll be certain to let you know!
