amorous fossils

amorous fossils

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

amorous fossils

bones

of lovers

covered with soft sod

recently filled-in graves of graphic pain

skeletons of relationships

of suicide kisses

ring fingers, calcium congregations

of wedding worms crawling down

some cryptic aisle

i found you before they covered us up

we embraced in a chorus of "death do us part"

and then the poison pervaded our proposition

with perpetual misunderstanding

a fatal dose of unwitting misconception

and they laid us out like Romeo and Juliet

no Capulets or Montagues to grieve

but ghosts of our hearts

held hands

and wept.

this is sad and beautiful, poetry with actual humanity who would a thunk it lol your writing is a breath of fresh air. to rampant word games and noise that assault sincerity. Robert Christgau ounce said "irony is the defense of everything and the justification of nothing." and i would add irony is justified by having something to defend against. just a fancy way of saying thank you for your honesty.

As colours can complement, or clash, so do personalities. But sometimes discord, can be a spur to appreciating true harmony.

yes, it can, Norman...so true.
thank you for your words,

Can two ever see as one? Sometimes perhaps, but sadly not always; and perhaps misconception is as much to blame as misunderstanding.

Brilliant poetry, and I thought the title a touch of genius.

Beccy.

Brilliant alliteration with a meaning that packs a punch: "the poison pervaded our proposition with perpetual misunderstanding" (one reason I never got married). It's one of those lines that every writer wishes he/she'd written! Your love cynicism is rich & tangy (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I always thought they got the funeral and wedding ceremonies mixed up. Weddings really should start with the words. Ashes to ashes.
Archaeologists probably have all the answers.

I think legends are born from those loves that had a short existence having such intensity compared to those where the flames turned to embers then cold coals. Maybe given time all loves turn to coals cold!

Everything comes with a shelf-life and an expiry date. Beyond that point one feels like asking a few questions to be sure :)

Hah - see - what did I say you'd be like at Scrabble - like a Black Belt or 2nd Dan ...a masterclass in alliteration! Not to mention imagery...

When the poison sets in it's fatal more often than not - we can't simply suck out the toxins and spit them out like the old Westerns.
