the subliminal hard sellA Poem by jacob erin-cilberto
the subliminal hard sell
figure
heads don't figure much in
decisions they are window dressing mannequins for style and
sales
within each system, each
chain of command there is the
ventriloquist dummy set out in front,
side-of-mouth whispers manipulating
the mouth to speak
hands of board members
making the head nod or shake a salty
"no" or push out of the way rulers don't rule
and behind the scene is the real scene one to which we are not
privy even in the front row
we do not see behind the
curtain and the silk fabric
might as well be iron democracy is a quick
snort of cocaine and a forced smile
the prescription is
bound to run out we are too addicted to
following leaders who don’t lead we are a Bay of Pigs
invaded, pillaged pretending to understand our slaughter
the figure heads really
don't figure much at all, they are just
puppeteers' numbers that don't add up
yet we walk by the
window stare longingly,
enviously at them and then unwittingly buy the product.
