Searching that tree that Grew in Brooklyn

Searching that tree that Grew in Brooklyn

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Searching that tree that Grew in Brooklyn

literally hanging

from a figurative branch of fool's wood

with bark gold spots of inclination

and bastardization of words.

i consume poetry like a koala does

eucalyptus leaves

and i leave extinct specimens

of free verse

as droppings

the scent escapes into the winds of modernism

where everything twitters in rhyme

but makes so little sense

i see an abandoned tree

and scurry with hope

but at first climb

it is like all the others

growing towards a gray sky

of monotony

and disciplined sameness

so i just hang upon a branch

upside down and waiting

waiting

for something

refreshingly old.

Poetry is not an easy endeavor even for those who have been doing it for years. I see that sameness a lot eve in my own attempts which leaves me frustrated.

To search and find poetry (old or new) that surprises and inspires is like finding some kind of answer even if the excitement wears off. It's sort of like finding out there is always someone out there we haven't found yet that validates the potential in all of us.

I believe the only way to create poetry that is unique and different is to eat as many poems as possible. Those droppings are bound to entertain others as your writing does.

Good poem Jacob.

thank you for your kind words, Tim.

The world we now inhabit certainly seems as if it is:
"... growing towards a gray sky
of monotony
and disciplined sameness."

"Refreshingly old" very nicely characterizes an emerging and fervent inner desire of those capable of remembering; to our Brave New World, of course, this concept is more discredited fantasy.
Here, Jacob, you manage to be profoundly wise and charmingly fanciful.

It is so true. Some things we read, it seems we can't get enough of it and we like to reread often. Others, make us anticipate boredom and monotony. No new fruit on the tree or leaves, no tasty treats! But humans are creative and entertaining to an extent. An excellent write, sir Jacob.

I love these lines! Speaks to me of a poet thriving on poetry, taking what inspires him, leaving the rest. Struggling against monotony, trying to come up with something refreshingly new. And you did here!

It is such a pleasure always!
Superb writing Jacob, there is certainly a glut of poetry about and one does have to sieve through the rubbish including mine lol to find a gem. There’s a lot of thoughts out there and like most traditional values are fading as well as traditional poets. Maybe time’s are a changing?

Hmmm.

This seems a metaphorical comment on the state of modern poetry and that poetry which can be encountered on this site.

It is true that there is a 'sameness' to much of today's writing; perhaps stemming from a lack of imagination rather than lack of talent. I can relate to the sentiments of this write, Jacob, and being Australian you made me proud with the Koala reference!

I suppose hanging from the branch is the place to stay. You never know when the next eucalyptus gem will come along.

Another fine write, Jacob. And how about those Yanks, huh? Can you smell another World Series?
