the goodbye girl's summation

the goodbye girl's summation

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the goodbye girl's summation

when devastation is
the subject or object of a  sentence
it is never a great news story

there are no adjectives or adverbs to smile upon
when they describe the extent
of damage to sad nouns

we verbalize, idealize, and not realize
often how our words can sting
like rabid manta

Maria was a beauty in West Side Story
but she is a villain in the real life movie
as islands are flattened
at her whim

her song is a raspy, scratchy record
with water logged grooves
it is never a great news story

from high ground
dry high ground
rich high ground
impervious high ground

we ground coarse words into reckless interview
when devastation is
the subject or object of the sentence

and even the shortest fragments
contain misdirected articles
blown away in a category five
verbal storm.

Sounds like she needs a
grammar lesson.

she hates grammar...:)))
Great comparison... "Maria" in West Side Story to Hurricane Maria. Indeed, so many words have been spoken that might have been well intentioned, but were not heard that way. Words do sting...especially to those suffering. Well written. Lydi**

In a dream of a midnight storm, the crazy winds blew me away, stunned, unconscious like a broken egg I awoke to find myself in poetry's bed.

Great writing!

Al

West Side Story is on the T.V. this week. I wonder if the broadcasters are making the connection. Probably not. Storms of life.

Maria is singing towards Britain.
News on the street went something like. Only advise us if seven days of sun are on the way. You sort of get the impression we embellish fake news here.

No Richard Dreyfuss here to pull the panties from the line. Went through a little Category One last year in the Carolinas, can't picture a Cat.5. The verbal storm after an event like this is always a matter of angst and finger pointing. Hard to fight Mother Nature. Good one, j.

love the title ... these storms do after all say goodbye ... Thank God! says i! the satire on coverage and commentary are sharp and how i wish the neews media took it to heart ... none of them seem to care much .. they are so excited at the prospects of advancing their careers they will stand in the middle of an evacuated street ... advertising signs sailing by in the winds ..their own torsos at a 45 degree angle ... and fixing appropriate faces between their ears .. and then the story becomes the politicians ..oh how they are this...oh how they that ... and oh i can go on and on but my dog Bella demands me off the soap box ;)

Ah but only sensational news sells and captivates the audience with a consequent loss of empathy for the real devastation and the portrayal of reality. Vitriol on a page Jacob!

Expertly woven.
You wield a quiet, razor-sharp buzz-saw.
Guess that's mixin' metaphors; I can live with it.
A*s-kicker, Jacob!

Indeed, its never a great news story!
I wish the news industry realized it. They won't, however, dramatizing it all instead of reporting the real situation on ground. The concluding verse is awesome where you speak of "misdirected articles
blown away in a category five
verbal storm."

The title of the poem is great....
I hope and pray Maria mellows down...

Appreciated very much sir!
