the North Star

the North Star

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the North Star

Dylan's blue

old Italian poets drowning in Venice waters

funneled words in Gondolas

singing songs of morning,

young lovers kissing under a bridge of sighs

ancient teenagers

learning more than kindly old men dare to tell

goodbye is always saturated

by rivers on cheeks of intense struggle

i grew up once and you were standing by

now i am an old wise man

nearing the nativity of what once was my naivety

and i see you in the straw mirrors

behind me reflected like a giant

your strong hand guiding me

as i swim in grave waters

hoping the end is as calm

as you were

when the clouds interrupted

sky.

I lived in Italy and have been to Venice many times and your words took me back to a time of innocence. Everything in slow motion. Smiles and laughter. Cobblestone and romance. Beautifully done Jacob. I would single out a line but I can't. Thank you for taking me back to times I shall never forget.

Absolutely Jacob. My pleasure.
So many images here....the wise gondoliers seeing it all, but never revealing what they see. Youth and its naivety is still a part of us even when the calendar pages have turned. We want to be strong...like perhaps a parent was for us when we were young. Can we be? I think we are as strong as the situations we are handed. All your poetry leaves so much to the reader's interpretation and I think that is what makes it so easy to read. Lydi**

Those canoodling young lovers bring back a time when love was innocent, naive and bereft of heartache!

Beautifully penned Jacob with a soul searching, yearning pen!

Like the notion of funneling "words in Gondolas."
And I figure myself for one of those "ancient teenagers"--what I virtually am, right now.
God, man, heavenly body or guiding principle, we all have our "North Star."
As for the rest, mighty pretty phrases.
You do good work, Jacob, and a lot of it!

this should be from the Wings of a Dove-
or was that your last one?
reminds me of Henry James' Milly.
Venice instead of London.

'when the clouds interrupted sky' ended this Jacob piece in style for me as you craft words into emotions and emotions into words.

Jacob this is a magnificent tribute to your constant "North Star" who you've navigated by in your life. Breath-taking wordage and metaphor use-"goodbye is always saturated by rivers on cheeks of intense struggle" "When the clouds interrupted the sky"-every line rich with amazing imagery. September of your years, I think not yet my friend. Hapoy for us, you have many 'miles to go before you sleep'...Kudos to the Master!
