Sleight of Heart

Sleight of Heart

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Sleight of Heart

breathless,

we searched for shelter

in each other's warmth

dazzled pillows welcomed our heads

as we sank into the sheets of oblivion

knowing we were a fleeting occasion

and that life would get in the way,

we would change into our older clothes

the ones we couldn't shed for pleasure

finders keepers, may be true

but shelter is a temporary stay

and sooner or later we emerge

from the cocoon of contentment

and fly headlong into another's

more formal arms,

wondering why we had to

lose the magic.

Some are condemned by themselves, "I've made my bed..."
As you well know Jacob this life is oh so fleeting, so to live large chunks of it unhappy makes little or no sense. We should have the courage, selfishness even, to grant ourselves happiness.
Good evening Jacob, hope you are well.

Ah growing up and having to accept the mantels of maturity, responsibility and conformity. Such a sad way for a Bohiemian heart to starve. So flowing in another elegant and enjoyable piece Jacob.

Unfortunately, not sleight of hurt.
For me, the magic was early lost--never to rear its pretty head, again.
A smart bit of creative insight that, once again, reveals my own personal wretchedness.

When I read "knowing we were a fleeting occasion," I was chilled to the bone. My perspective on this beautiful moment you began to describe was flipped, and the reality of the situation set in as I read on. I also loved your comparison of the encounter (or even the relationship itself) to a cocoon: something safe, temporary, and transformative.

Great title-Passion and eloquence with transience and abandon. Consenting adults..Stolen moments-, unjudged. "finders keepers, may be true...but shelter is a temporary stay"-thought provoking."wondering why we had to..lose the magic". It's complicated...

WOW...what a story told here. An affair of the heart...each knowing the passion they share is fleeting, but worth the risk. How sad that many feel they are stuck in a bad relationship and have to turn to someone else....someone unavailable. Lydi**
