a certain truancy

a certain truancy

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

a certain truancy

we woke up in the end lounge

of a bell-bottomed dormitory

studying anatomy

but skipping class

for personal reasons

absence of academic pursuit

but brilliant in the ways of young love

by-products of a time

sit-ins, love-ins

paisley possessiveness

no book binders,

just arms and hearts attached

to the pages of us

then graduation came

and we walked separate aisles

degrees in hand,

but hands not in each other's

diplomas of a reality

we never saw coming,

but then,

we never sat through even one lecture

on the way things really were.

I think you'd make a great gardener.
Ditch this weed and start a-new seed.

thank you for the smile, Bacchus.

Radiates melancholy and regret--yet there is a deep longing for these sweet times.
No highly principled young person ever focuses on the way things are; like Bobby, they always see the way things ought to be.
Very much enjoyed this look back!

I understand that Jacob. Distance and time are best for forgetting.
ah love and abandon of the sixties and seventies (still played out today) captured in metaphors. So many times this scene is played out when people go their seperate ways once uniiversity ends.
