sleeping with the enemy

sleeping with the enemy

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

sleeping with the enemy

curvature of the spine

of humanity

of what we stood for

now a crooked

back

from the weight

of what we've become

and only the springs

    underneath the mattress

of serenity

remember some

comfort once felt

on a dark soft night

before innocence was purloined---

Humanity is not sleeping. It is dead. The enemy is not loss of innocence but addiction to evil. Man has become his own murderer and must die for his crime. Then he can live forever and maybe even enter the race of the Gods. I offer no hope for the body of humanity. But for the mind that dares be the one telling the brain what to do at all times that it might even protect or not kill its body there is hope of becoming anything even a God after the brain's demise.

thank you for your insights, John...

I read this several times and each time, it drew me into another level. So many things this applies to, and what sticks out to me is that 'becoming', good or bad carries weight with it, and we often yearn for the softness of years past. Thoughtful. as usual, Jacob.

"The levels... all the levels..." pick a reality - any ...and it fits.

The springs of innocence in that bed are definitely struggling with the weight of man's inhumanity, no doubt about that Jacob as you so incisively point out in fine poetic metaphor!

What have we become as a society? Good question. Progress sometimes seems like it goes into reverse instead of drive. Serenity? Peace? Not sure we will ever see this in our lifetimes. Our innocence has been stolen! No doubt. Lydi**

I imagine this is political. Just from being on this site and hearing opinions from certain people in the past, I've started to pay attention to what's been going on in government and the media. I often wonder if they're governing us, or controlling us.

Of course it goes deeper than that but you get the drift.

Nice one Jacob.

Your writing style invokes imageries of a hostile episode in my own life! The term "enemy" serves the social function of designating a particular entity as a threat, thereby invoking an intense emotional response to that entity. Very well executed and poetic composition!

So brilliant, so powerful, so human.Amazing metaphor- you are incredible j."what we stood for" vs. "what we've become"- likened to a broken body on a bed... Perfect. Kudos!

Excellent . purloined fits just perfectly. The enemy feels like a betrayal. Robbed of trust. However this is the path we take unknowing. Great read as always.
