the scent of regret

the scent of regret

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the scent of regret

growling canines
unwanted visitors
the house, otherwise quiet
the heart beats in the dark,
the dogs approach the door
a knock resonates...
anxious hands touch wood
she tenses,
they want her,

she whispers softly to some god to save her,
the men in her life,
await,
a lock clicks,
her heart breaks all over again

the dogs attack,
jaws snapping at flesh,
but the bite marks are invisible
as are the ghosts of her past

there is a sudden hush
the ambiance becomes stifling
her memory is her own leash

her eyes snarl,
teeth of anger bared

they won't let her alone,
like paparazzi,tales of the past
                        hound her

 relentlessly.

thank you, Julie....

damn! very hard hitting for me ...i think men especially need to take heed and feel this pain and how that leash can hold and bite ... i am inspired to think about and pray for those women who have suffered abuse ... tho your poem clearly is more universal and layered than that ... i think this is one to be published and read more broadly ...but i'm glad you shared it here

This has the right amount of nervous tension to keep the reader hooked...
Some memories of the past always lurk around...

My pleasure.
I like the pauses for effect keeping me hanging on each word eyes whipping to the next line in suspense. I had to re-read it a couple of times because I was scanning too fast the first time just to see what happens. Love it when that happens. The last time was just to savor the word choice and imagery. You were able to touch that nervous energy and fear when things haunt you. Nicely done my friend.

A sad tale, but one that is unfortunately part of so many women's biographies. Some memories are impossible to erase...or overcome. Lydi**

Our past can have a big influence on our hear and now, even if we don't realize it... Quite an intense analogy to describe the effects of bad things in the past catching up with us.
