some classics are difficult to read

some classics are difficult to read

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

some classics are difficult to read

rising from the awkward shadows

the eyes spoke volumes

like dark mines with secret entrances

you stood there in brief

a short story pouring out words

Hawthorne's breathing on a page of anxiety

questions in the summoning

spelunkers find truce

lips quiver, don't lie

walking together in an echoed frame

the picture from a past darkness

finds its sunspots

no posing necessary

just a whiff of insane trust

and a old book shaking its dust

opening in preface

doubts of the postscript

but willing to investigate

the twists and turns

that once drove us underground

because the burning sensation from the sun

was more than we could engage

at the time.

so we deliberate

back on page one again.

When I was young. I dislike the old poetry. After years of reading. Donne, Ben Jonson and Dryden. Their book are always near.

I agree and I liked the above lines. Thank you Jacob for sharing the amazing poetry.

I enjoyed the beat writers also.
Some poets, too. They frequently have "dark mines with secret entrances."
Over and over again, you seek to understand lost love; over and over again, you yearn to find it.
Poignant, noble and beautiful!

yes, we seek to understand---perhaps poetry is a way there.
thank you, Jimmy.

I used to read the classics regularly but now my feeble train of thought can't keep up with the multi-layers of thought, storylines, symbolism, etc. I love your observations here . . . the most interesting aspect is how each 3-line stanza could stand alone as a singular thought-provoking idea.

It's worth it in the end. Paradise is not lost, just terribly difficult to find.

Puritanical breath and an explorer's pot holing instinct to enter those caves. Expressive from the first stanza to the last. The first sets such a macabre scene with those black holes of eyes!
