at light speed, slowly

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

at light speed, slowly

hummingbirds fly backwards

time doesn't

i see your face before me

and the hands of my clock shake

but you still move forward

and my wings are clipped by your scent

after all these years

the dizzying effect nests in my heart

with the wish i could have been older

when i was younger,

perhaps we could have flown into infinity

on one wing,

rather than looking at each other

with the glass of him

between,

separating what could have been

from what became.

like the metaphor of hummingbirds fly back like our reflections on looking back on past memories and what we would have done different.yes one wishes to be older to get that girl who sees us as too young and then we wish we were younger in later years to keep her lol. such a paradox if thats the word .

The opening stanza here is captivating. The image of the hummingbird stands out as does the shaking clock. Such pathos in pithy stuccato phrases. The
