A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

near Wells River

an old dirt road in Vermont

gray fox struts across

barely noticing us

an old sly fox

lying in-between the sheets of life and death

barely noticing us

he has walked his roads

they lean upward

he spreads his wings

foxes can fly..

thank you for your kind words, Julie.

This has again a stark feel to it as the opening stanza sets a scene of a quiet, tranquil backwater and the fox going unmolested about his stealthy business. The entry of a deathbed scene where the main character is described as a fox who hardly notices us is perhaps a reference to someone who did their own thing and their escape into death cannot be a relief as they escape unchallenged into the flight of the dead.
