the ventriloquist under the covers

the ventriloquist under the covers

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the ventriloquist under the covers

she does her best impression

of a tear,

it's glass

she's fragile and quakes

at his stillness

even in life,

she feared him,

tried to find a bond

something to attach an emotion

nervous laughter

he doesn't respond now

the voice will never soften in her ear

she'll find rest eventually

but the glass will always risk

shattering,

long after he's gone.

This has the pathos of the morgue, a cold, brittle, sterility as though someone fragile is standing with the corpse of someone they both feared and revered?

Remarkable story the reader conjours from these few but well chosen and placed lines. Impressive stuff Jacob. But when do I expect anything less?

It seems even in death someone can still control you.
Sure no rejoicing in this poem, Jacob.

some will still be controlled for sure...thank you, Paul..

How the dead reach out and touch the psyche in ways that bring smiles, tears or terror, and the thought from beyond that can shatter tormented glass.

Good write, j..
