still that girl

still that girl

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

still that girl

there is a tall tree in myopic

sentiment,

i stand by it,

watching you from a distance

your hand entwined in another's

a leaf touches my shoulder

as a tear falls beside me

or is it my own?

you used to be

when i was young and budding

and in my spring uprising

enterprising

love in my back pocket

future hanging from my neck

like a fool's gold chain

i tasted your beauty

kissed your scent with weak knees

shattering themselves from your breath

your lips put me in another universe

but that tree was always in my future,

even then

i knew you would not accompany me from that present

to this one,

even as your smile was burning through me

the ashes were strewn in disarray

i knew we'd never collapse together

over the simmering coals

for longer than an interim

i watch you now

from that distance

that tree having seen many seasons pass

my heart still as close as then

but your memory of me

is just a glance

favoring slight recognition

or not.

ah to bloom where we are planted
always wishing it could've been
a few more feet in another direction, right?

reminded me of shel silverstean's giving tree
not sure if you are still standing or a stump.

love your insights...thank you, Bacchus.

Tis a brutal truth that many fall into a relationship and feel it to be a forever partnership while also harbouring doubts as to ones own veracity. Once the ending has come they brood for years the what ifs while they are tortured by seeing there erstwhile lover in parallel universe.
Filled with dark and pathos loaded metaphors as always Jacob.

Ain't it a b***h?
Bearing a world of precious memories about her, while barely being remembered by her.
Makes you feel as if your once significant other has likely always regarded you as the insignificant one.
Stunning write, Jacob!

I love the way this poem weeps in sadness.

With such love there is acceptance and resignation. And the ability to see the beloved happy from a distance. Though our own heart weeps. Letting go is an art not many know. The poem moved me so much.

"but that tree was in my future, even then" ... Isn't it amazing that hindsight gives us the ability to recognize what we saw so far ago? Reminiscence. Smarts sometimes. This is beautiful.
