still that girl

still that girl

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

still that girl

there is a tall tree in myopic

sentiment,

i stand by it,

watching you from a distance

your hand entwined in another's

a leaf touches my shoulder

as a tear falls beside me

or is it my own?

you used to be

when i was young and budding

and in my spring uprising

enterprising

love in my back pocket

future hanging from my neck

like a fool's gold chain

i tasted your beauty

kissed your scent with weak knees

shattering themselves from your breath

your lips put me in another universe

but that tree was always in my future,

even then

i knew you would not accompany me from that present

to this one,

even as your smile was burning through me

the ashes were strewn in disarray

i knew we'd never collapse together

over the simmering coals

for longer than an interim

i watch you now

from that distance

that tree having seen many seasons pass

my heart still as close as then

but your memory of me

is just a glance

favoring slight recognition

or not.

Oh, the last is so sad! But you'd better watch writing such romance. You know it makes us ladies weak in the knees :) I enjoyed this immensely. I.I.

A bittersweet beauty of a write. Seeing someone who "coulda been" with another....it hurts. Even if you are sure in your heart it would not have worked out, you want the other person to feel what you feel. Maybe, just maybe, she does....but how can you know for sure? Heavy sigh. Lydi**

I remember you in every stoke of the pen or click or the type writer.....in every thought out word , smile, or tear. I'll remember long after the breeze has blown this anthology shut. She remembers...she always remembers...but she too knew. Into my treasure box with a tissue this goes!

You hope even though time has passed, she did recognise you, and her heart was pounding.
Keep that thought.

There are those that come into our life and leave, destined never to be forgotten. The yearning that you are able to instill in the heart of the reader is exceptional to the point that I can read it in every line and envision the tree of hope that does not want to bend its branches to defeat.
The ending of two words, "or not" certainly lets us know you didn't want to let go, and wonder if the other feels the same, hoping so in the memory that remains!

the one that got away?
there are people that come into our lives that we want to forget and others that refuse to be forgotten

the backpocket line makes me wonder if a young foolish man took this love for granted

The one that was never destined to be yours.
You cherish those memories and she is not even aware that you existed.
Very beautifully penned.
