the fog masks the mountain

the fog masks the mountain

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the fog masks the mountain

on a fool's errand
amidst the flames of disbelief
you once were a possibility,
but the smoke exhausted rituals
of connection,

have become dire ashes on a last breath
and mountains are less symmetrical
than those little mole hills
we created as kids,

and now we can't climb above them
to see the good in each other---

we build electrical fences
that short circuit our hearts
and leave us smoldering over nothing.

No wonder the selfie has become the new currency among kids (and simpletons). We have taught them that its okay to be self-obsessed, forsaking all others in a quest for 'ME'.
I have watched "talent show" judges deliberately split up friends and family on TV with a vague promise of 15 minutes of fame. They split them with relish - perhaps deliberately to show the flake-ness of being in the spotlight - perhaps out of badness to show how the 'Japanese knotweed' of popularity has made erstwhile bonds irrelevant and redundant.

The fog may be on the mountain J, but there are still decent foghorns like your poetry to alert us.

Really like this, a perfect mix of external poetic
quality and individual reflection. A fine poem from one of my favourite writers here..

Welcome Jacob
devastating how we can let our differences or old slights get in the way of trust and a lasting affection.

oh those fences ..a vivid image i have in reading ..such a dangerous thing to wrap electric fence around such a wet and meaty organ ..short circuits seem inevitable ...whew! and i really like the mole hills and mountains contrast ...as a "kid" boys had disagreements that could end in a fist fight that lasted not more than about 3 minutes with half the school watching, not "ganging" .. today our children are not safe anywhere .. gang mentality is vicious and numbing even the smallest of slights is met with slaughter ..Chicago is a devastated city ..and Detroit as well .. they use to be so vibrant as economic centers ... maybe there will be change eh!? i can also read a lost romance in this jacob ..you seem to always leave room for many interpretations :)

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. I suppose that holds on a personal level as well as a societal one. Good write, j.

You take words, mould them around thoughts and nostalgia and turn them into art. Exceptional and beautiful. You know I would like the title of this, Jacob.

I read the reviews here...and the poem twice...you once were a possibility..smoke exhausted rituals...profound... like running through a meadow..of beautiful wildflowers...and then...you get stung by a yellowjacket...you can feel...this poem..
So meaningful...
Thank You...
