wishing for seconds

wishing for seconds

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

wishing for seconds

toc-tic toc-tic

like rewinding the reels of a flick

i toss aside today's breakfast for

yesterday's lunch

and find you sitting across from me

staring that sandwich smile

onto my plate

i take a bite and remember your strong hands

hoisting me over your head,

as i sit there wondering what kind of thoughts

you are masticating in there now

and eventually it really doesn't matter

just imagining we are seeing a similar movie

is enough.

Great image of the speedy, jerky almost un-human movements of rewinding film.
The young-un yearns to be like the parent then comes the desire to be so different and then the resignation (not in a bad way) that Apple's can only fall so far from their life-giving tree.
I enjoyed this one j.

I see an image of a time machine and I would like to enter and go back but wonder are we doomed to make the same mistakes again or would we change our future.

Yes I would hope so as well
It is that thought that keeps us going back, hoping however briefly that we will find ourselves on the same page once again and be hoisted up. A good write, j. as this series has all been.

This has such a poignant overtone...and yet, there is a sense of peace and acceptance, as well.
It's a beautiful blending of emotion and memories and acceptance of life...and the tic tocking of the clock.
Very nice!

This is one of my favorites of yours that are reminiscent of an aging loved one. I like the way your parallel analogous observations are braided together, side by side, & nicely (unexpectedly) congruous. I get glimpses of this person-in-a-shell with glimmers of recognition.

i miss my Dad ...
"i take a bite and remember your strong hands
hoisting me over your head,"
did that with all my children :) squealing in fright for more when i tossed them .. "masticating" rudely woke me up .. pretty visceral ..not sure i have read it in a poem before .. i imagine my Dad enjoying his game of pitch with his buddies .. pretty sure they are all there enjoying their bit of heaven

Watching the slow demise of our loved ones isn't easy but you always capture those shared moments perfectly in words that move us. Yes, time is precious.
