Road Construction

Road Construction

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Road Construction

there's relevance on an interstate
miles of time to create tire tracks on white roads

thinking is a way to travel through states of mind
and the ink in the steering wheel
splashes pavement in frolicking acceleration

and when we get to our destination
the burnt rubber rhetoric
finally gets to cool and expand
tread bare words in a rear view mirror of destiny

left in a work zone,
keyboard traffic slows down to a crawl
and i wave at the flagman
synonymously trying to find an alternate route

to get to the end of my poem.

I am thinking as I read of cool hand Luke and the warden's famous line "what we have here is a failure to communicate"... "frolicking acceleration" and "burnt rubber rhetoric" damn sure are road blocks to critical thinking... and critical thinking is something that is definitely out of favor these days.... just follow the rhetoric to our destiny... a road block that humanity can ill afford... it won't just be the end of your poem Jacob...so where is this alternative route, I want to wave at the flagman too...

I like your thinking through the state of mind...

Thelma and Louise meets James Dean. Writing should never be contrived. We rarely think about destiny having a rear view mirror but it makes sense that all our work has a beginning where were first turned the ignition and stepped on the pedal. I love it when you throw the GPS out the window. Sweet poetry, Jacob!

yes, never contrived, just let it flow naturally and the best will find itself on the page.

The paths maybe different but the destination is the same. One day quite suddenly and without warning our poems will end.

This reminds me of all the times I have started writing one of my story poems and it takes on a life of its own going in a direction I had not planned but is just as ok, or better.

Yes, it's like that. Like magic.
There is more than one way to make a journey Jacob, as your wonderful words here attest to. There are even more ways to get to the end of a poem, but you have certainly found a unique way of getting there on a road I have never came across on a map. Wonderfully captured.

Do you wonder if we are ever finished? Seems there is always another construction zone ahead. The roads must roll. Nice one, jacob.

Jacob, Such a powerful metaphor for something becoming so lacking each and every day. "Thinking is a way to travel through states of mind".....Yes! Yes! and Yes! You capture that joy possible in what can result "frolicking acceleration." Provocative and well done!

.. ''thinking is a way to travel through states of mind

Writing really is a journey which is often exhausting, trying o n the eyes, mind and all.
There are detours and pauses, overnight stops, battli ng through re.routes, frequent
bew ilderment - wondering if the will might break down. Is the effort i worth the bother? Might the destination end up a convolut ed d disappointment

You've created not on ly a poem but a means of sh owing how words can channel success or deter progre ss. ..

Truly, your knowledge of every aspect of writing is vast.. you use metaphors and thought pro cesses that.. amaze.
