rabid apathy

rabid apathy

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

rabid apathy

bats search

for the crack of dawn

telephone lines to rest

line drive wings

over the fence of catastrophe

home plate shattered

America in the dark,

street lights burnt out for profit

souls burnt out for free

and Lady Liberty waves the white kerchief

dangerous practice, when those bats are flying

and no one in the stands is paying attention.

This is the age of oversensitivity, where we are supposed to be politically correct, they give trophies for participating and so on... If there were an apocalypse the Millenniums wouldn't survive.

your words are so true, Dale.

thank you.
I guess I would be the poster child for rabid apathy. I've never voted in my 42 years of "adulthood". I honestly cannot understand but a fraction of the statement you're making here, even tho I read the many long & thoughtful reviews (some bordering on rants). I'm still clueless. Just give me my natural outdoor living & my furry friends . . . the rest of this ridiculous grinding mass of competing gyrations can go headlong into destruction if they may . . . I don't really care. I'm finally old enuf to just bide my time until peaceful death. I do, however, pray for the youth that inherit this big cesspool we've allowed to fester thru apathy such as my own *sigh!*

Wow...I love this poem. Oddly enough, it speaks to me...feelings I've felt, but haven't put into words yet. Its simple. Direct. And very powerful. Thank you so much for sharing.

thank you for your kind words, ReedWrite.

we are here because this is exactly where this profit driven system will always bring us to... they spend billions to make sure we stay between the lines Jacob, that even when we do pay attention they must have us believe that it is only in revising the original that we can survive and yet this is the very illusion that keeps us from really doing the things that can and will change things for the better... neither lady liberty nor baseball holds the answers we must have to break with apathy and compliance... in fact both hold us back, prevent us from really seeing the real history of this country, what is has and continues to do down to today... America was never great...

I know Jacob you are aiming your voice at apathy and people not noticing the way things are today, a voice that must be heard... much like the Yeats poem does in "The Second Coming"... there are way too many of our generation who should know better yet still spout on about founding fathers ad nauseum and too many of our young people not knowing... but illusion will really help no one...

one of the best things about poets and poetry and Jacob your poetry has been and continues to be part of this is to lead people to think and dig deeply into reality through metaphor and imagery... not all are apathetic it would seem.. thanks for this Jacob...

I find this so strong. The format, the symbolism, the subject, the underlying topical currents. To say it has it all may seem a little effusive but I'm finding it difficult not to be so. (And how can you be a little effusive? I ask myself).

your poem raises so many issues and warnings to my mind. I call it the socialist's crawl .. insipid over many years .. i am old enough to remember the threats of Nakita in '63, or there about. His ranting disputation proclaiming that Communism would destroy America from within; using its own laws. there are plenty of pages to choose from but one may check this out

i think my only next step is to run for office ..but i am retired and have no passion for something like that ... i wouldn't be very good at it .. i'm too easy :(
timely poem sir ... lots of news sources out there to glimmer the truth and not the "shiny thing over there"
sadly i believe your closing is so true

How perfectly appropriate J. The symbolism is very good. Baseball is America's game and Lady Liberty the great symbol must surely have tears rolling down her cheeks. I'm afraid not only are people in the stands not paying attention, they're rooting for a losing team.

As ever your words as a poem are finely tuned and displayed. But its content has both a bite and snarl - veiled maybe, but there.

Your country is - in many people's opinion, a great country, plus, has more than everything to make its population proud. Usually. However, was reminded recently: a truly Wise Human Being would never represent people who turn their backs on common sense, appraisal of facts and, like it or not, what is essential within a greater (read global) need. Your bats flit in and out of shadows, scaring and scarring some, but for others represent something lost and found.. then, ignored.

Sorry, made this a pollitical review rather than an appreciation of your poem... which is more than.. plus maybe one shouldn't comment in a matter than doesn't concern her.. except that it does.. we all walk the same planet... Could there be a reason for that?

Don't usually agree with Trump on anything. But i do agree America shouldn't be paying to defend the western world. A strong America is a must, if she's hurting. The western world must rally. Sadly i think it doesn't matter who gets elected. These two are not leaders.

Yes indeed, I see parallels here with the highly topical presidential election, almost a satire between two massive egos and it's a sad state of affairs when the two people jockeying for the most powerful position in the world seem so detached and aloof from society's actual concerns and needs !

An intriguing, subjectively penned piece of writing Jacob !
