No Mas

No Mas

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

No Mas

fisticuffs of creativity

the gloves are off,

the rounds short

ideas in the corner getting treated for cuts

inspiration a blurred vision

hard to fend off the punches

of bad lyrics,

i'm falling toward a blank canvas

fingers taped and bloodied

from throwing phrases against a plaster of paris wall

the ring becomes smaller than the screen

i can't see vowels and consonants

well enough to put combinations together

i want to go down for the count

and find another profession

something safer,

like working with explosives

since the TNT

of poetry

has already blown my keyboard to bits

and here i am,

begging my corner muse

to throw in the towel.

Writing can be such a mental beat down.
But every time we think we're down for the count. We pick ourselves up again. And somehow, hopefully, the inkwell magically refills itself. Yes, maybe a change of profession is what is needed. Or maybe, we just need a break. Taking on too many projects, combined with any unexpected setbacks. The expectations become a mountain. Where things just get overlooked. With deadlines looming and others due.
It's enough for anyone to throw in the towel. And I admit, I have.
There. I said it. haha I feel a little better.. Thanks j, It feels good... I almost forgotten how rewarding it is to just write for myself. I enjoyed reading this. A metaphor, I can so relate too.

thank you for your kind words, and for relating to this piece, Roma...

In life we need to be challenged or we get bored with life and lose the passion for what we do.

"the TNT of poetry"...wonderful! We have all gone a few rounds with the muse and screamed, "UNCLE". You are the winner and still champ when it comes to metaphor! Lydi**

so awesome
the fight
the intensity
often is confused with being soft
... bleeding is much more like it.

We all face this at some stage. Trying to write but the words do not come out the way we want them to.
It's certainly not time to throw in the towel.
You will live to fight another day.

Damn, I pictured camel trains, vast open deserts, searing heat, beduoins wrapped like an Arabs washing line and an oasis with sultry belly dancers tucked inside a cooling tent , ready to entertain their weary guests....No " D" where's the bloody "D" Jacob. Even I can spell nomads !!

oh, you know, "life goes on bra, la la how the life goes on"
Oh I love this. It's super.
I love it. We spar with our keyboards all the time, whipping out thoughts good and bad.
(With ourselves and with others)
Don't throw in the towel - throw in the vowel! U

*throw. :) is what i meant
It would be a sin to throw in the towel, such talent going to waste. so intriguingly written and the words so well placed. great work. we all suffer the silence of the soul where nothing comes in and goes out and it feels like our imagination and motivation has dissolved, however, it is those mere feelings that make great writing.

I see gobs and gobs of wadded-up paper surrounding an old typewriter and a frustrated bearded man staring blankly at it all.

Perhaps boxing isn't the right game...maybe baseball. Hitting home runs is easier than scoring knockouts, and it's easier on the brain.

Welcome back, I hope the break was nice and productive.

There is always another fight, a possible victory ringside. You have to punch your way out of this one boxer and dab gently with the towel.

Al
