Doing Time

Doing Time

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Doing Time

the jury sentenced me

to life,

with you,

i have savored

every moment of confinement----

especially all the privileges

earned from sharing

with the perfect cellmate---

so much so,

i shall turn down any chance

for parole

and hope our sentence

becomes an eternal essay

of love.

True love can do this to a couple. I am happy to be a "lifer" myself! I enjoyed this piece very much.

What a lovable hope wrapped in your well-chosen words. I could sense the journey you went on while loving/being with someone who means a lot. I agree with Andrew below, it definitely reflects a soulmate feeling, particularly in your first stanza.

You're welcome as always.
Yes maybe this love will continue in the afterlife, as soulmates . What a privilege to love that long!

This poem is short and sweet. I really enjoyed it. Just curious, why do you write informally?

Sentenced to love... Now, that's a life sentence that doesn't seem all that bad.

I love the way your message takes a surprising turn -- wanting to remain in confinement, instead of wanting to break free. You've expressed the allure very well, I can feel the narrator being drawn into this situation. As always, you pick a metaphor & milk it to the very last drop with many related references: "cellmate" . . . "parole" . . . "sentence" . . . and my favorite: "eternal essay of love."
