A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Assembly Required

this contraption,

my heart,

directions were misprinted

something missing,

i had no idea how to put love together,

forgot key steps,

and when it tried to walk on its own

my heart

imploded

forgot to fill out the warranty

now, stuck with a broken self.

Your closing lines made me smile, a sort of witty ending to a rather lost mood. I can relate to your lines, particularly to "i had no idea how to put love together". Sometimes I think you partly write down my life, it's a lovable feeling yet often sad, as well.

thank you for relating, Vanessa...all we can hope for is that our words might reach out and touch so.. read more

That's so true and I am still surprised how often this actually works.
oh those darned instructions that so many refuse to read - do they even exist? :)

most of the time they are left out.

We can't help it. We fall whether we want to or not, and we keep going back for more.

Dear Jacob,

I can offer a pacemaker, defibulator and a lending ear.

okay...will take you up on all of them...

I like this poem. It is a great parody, and it made me feel both light and dark at the same time. Just to be clear that is a good thing, insert big smile here.

Well done.

thank you for your kind review, H.L.

How do you mend a broken heart? How do you trust again? I really enjoy your metaphorical writing. It really causes the reader to think and consider.

thank you for your kind words, James.

As is your wont, the metaphor is tightly drawn from start to finish, well-stitched together and finely built--much more so, sadly, than the hastily-built heart we all seem to come equipped with.

thank you for your words, W.k.

When you give your heart to someone then two things are possible- one, the person gives her heart in return, two, the person returns your heart after it has been broken. The latter situation is more common. Your work is always fascinating and full of emotions.

thank you for our insightful words, Vatsal.

Nothing heavy to carry around then a broken heart, I think the fixing is in the lightening it up. Great metaphor work, Jacob:)
