I think we fail when we do not take better care of choosing our muses... In so far as we can choose I guess.
"Don't go chasing waterfalls, stick to the rivers and lakes that you're used to" those I believe are TLC lyrics.
Some get caught up in wanting to write something big, grand and meaningful but the muse taunts them because they don't know enough about her/it to possibly understand and speak the truth.
My two cents. :)

"Wastelands of wit", "metaphoric mountains are just mirages"....fantastic alliterative phrases! The muse is not an easy taskmaster. He/she sends us inspiration and where we go with it, well, it is unpredictable. Still, the words you write are always very worthwhile....and when the fog clears, you should be able to realize that. Here you have described one writer's life using some of the most effective & imaginative word crafting ever! We all feel like frauds becuz every story has so many sides, it's impossible to do anything justice in words. We can only tell the slice of life that we're able to see at any given time. As always, stand-out alliteration & interesting play on words: "mists of missed opportunities" . . . & the second line is pretty mind-blowing in creativity & truth. This is one of my favorites of yours that I've read so far.

wow, thank you for your very kind words, barleygirl...
In poetry it can become tempting to paint our reality with the sometimes potent colours of fantasy. Let's face it as poets we all have an ego that we either serve as a ceaser at a feast or we corall as a wild bull that feels unbreakable. I was thinking as i read that given another world that could be me being seduced by my muse. Powerful one Mr J

Even our memories, with time, can fool us. We write because we have to...make some kind of sense of it, or just empty a lingering thought, or pain, even confusion out. If just someone relates and feels somehow inspired, understood, or not so alone then perhaps it is worth it. I'm reminded of the question "What is truth?" is it in the feeling a piece expresses or the exact situation described... I sense a ramble of mine coming on with no compass. Many thoughts about this one.

right- we write these mountains of emotions-
and then look back- like were they ever there- is everything I've ever felt/done just flat?
are we the real deal?
what we've said, what we've done?
left naked... in front of everyone
occurring every morning that we write with this inky dew...
are we sustaining nature- or just a swift random sparkle
