A great tribute to someone, probably a father or a very close friend. The grace of aging and the power of the human will are evident in this wonderful write and then the compassion of it all. Excellent, Jacob...:)............
I've had two conversations of late: one with a young woman, complaining about the age of the man she's dating, who is 16 years older than her, and one with a woman in her late 40's complaining about her ailing father that is declining in health and needs greater care.
With the first, she said, "Everything is fine right now, but what if something happens to him? I don't want to spend my time taking care of him." My response to her: "That's what love does. You might not be able to do everything, but you do all that you can. I can tell you right now that he would never abandon you. He would be there by your side until the very end. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow, and age is irrelevant. You could go out tomorrow and be in an accident."
With the second, I told her, "Well, think about all of the years that he took care of you."
We live in a society that tells people to do whatever feels good to them. If something is inconvenient, people want to sweep it away. If a woman gets pregnant with a child she doesn't want, she can just kill it and move on with her life. If one is unhappy or discontent in marriage, he can just get a divorce and move on. If a parent is elderly and needs care, just put him in a nursing home and move on. The most vulnerable are cast aside for the sake of convenience, money, freedom, what have you.
If we lose heart, we lose our humanity. We lose all that makes us human. Your words weep with the wont to make things better for your father. It's nice to see someone with heart. Don't ever lose it.

so true what you have said here...thank you for your words, Linda Marie...
a tragic write - memory and recognition slipping away - such is the plight of everyone in old age, becoming a different character as the personality drifts away - i dont want to be this character,
i'd rather be the one who moves in/draws closer
