guinea pigs and love equations

guinea pigs and love equations

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

guinea pigs and love equations

for you i was a simulated relationship

a trial run,

scientific experiment, so to speak

much margin for error either way

made you feel safe,

and then love trumped the formulaic theme

the numbers went out the window

with the breeze that blew out your comfortable candle

a flicker, then instability

i became matter that mattered

a test that couldn't be retaken

the pass/fail element composed itself

as empirical reality,

your stoic smile cracked,

the pen in your heart moved slightly

toward?

true or false

A or B

or C

or all of the above,

the lab filled with indecision,

your heart dissecting components of choice

as i waited,

probabilities on the table,

thinking forward and backward

all at once.

The title caught me because of its quirkiness. The piece is brilliant. An interesting take on a relationship blooming although unintentional perhaps. Kudos.

thank you for your kind words, Legion...

Jacob, you have a way with words here. It's a refreshing take on life as an experiment and the love thrown into the mix, to make it an interesting experiment. The write, has such a light hearted tone to it that you can't help but laugh quietly within yourself at the turn of phrases that make their way, as you read it.

These lines here:
"your stoic smile cracked,
the pen in your heart moved slightly
toward?
true or false
A or B
or C
or all of the above,"

What a beautiful way to capture the indecisiveness of heart's needle gone awry in love.

These lines topped for me:

"probabilities on the table,
thinking forward and backward
all at once."

Just can't get enough of it.. I'm having a merry time reading it again and again.
Enjoyed it thoroughly! :) :)

Oh that person that wants to be in a relationship that only suits their equation - no commitment and no fight just "flight" when the problem gets too complicated - I relate to this in my own way which is always so amazing about poetry - I love they way you put this experiment together Jacob :)

University was one of the best times of my life, learned a lot and stayed maybe a bit too long. The rewards will never leave me but there is no learning the way of romance. A really phenomenal write:)

thank you for your very kind review...and sharing how you related, Pryde.

You know all the formulas and equations do get thrown out of the window when it comes to matter of love, because it is it's unpredictability that makes it a subject easy to begin with but years required to gain mastery over it. There are so many who fail to attain. Yet those failures would always be bittersweet in my opinion. Makes you want to try again, fail again, yet fail better than the previous tests ^^

This is subtle on first reading you think I have it - but the sub text of the writer is proved not to be the sub text but the judgement hence the subject - I like this thinking a lot; One is left where will the writers pen choose A B or C - Hmm

All over the place, waiting like a Xmas tree to see if any gifts will come to fruition, reality a blueprint but the plan is sure to find its own way.

i totally love the scientific bend of this poem - love can be analyzed to death but its totality will elude us

If reality exists at all, it will be an empirical truth.
Thinking forward and backward at once creates a vacuum. And perhaps fitting, a time capsule to reserve the now of realized love.
