fables of the gables and rank posterity

fables of the gables and rank posterity

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

fables of the gables and rank posterity

i live in a mansion

of dreams and broken poems

of sit-down dinners

and matchstick windows

enclosed in longing and misunderstanding

watching him through a porthole

trying to imagine his philosophies at that age

endearing, broken tooth smiles

hair, a journey into the wild gray evening

of life,

i live in a mansion

of incessant worry,

about faucets leaking too many tears

about faulty shingles letting in the storms

about cracked glass genetics

making me live too long,

until spider web cracks in the ceiling

until spider web floss fills the gaps of the toothless rooms

i still live in,

even after the house has been long abandoned

i live in a mansion

but my mental capacity can no longer pay the taxes

and his diminishing road map of a face

seems directionless, and cursing the bonds

of longevity.

i live in a mansion

but want to sell it and move on to a small apartment

of apathy,

and just live, renting a non-committal feeling

about everything,

which is all gradually meaning nothing

to me

as now i stare out the cracked windows

wishing i could squeeze through those lines

with my pen.

That's the key isn't it, posterity, never mind the faulty shingles.

The mansion may crumble, but the memories remain.

For me this is a matchless piece. The imagery is awesome. The grey hair. The faucet leaking taps, just all of it. This is the stage of life that I dread the most. No its not age itself, the longing for death is due to the lonliness felt at this age that rushes to fill every nook and corner of this mansion and strips life of all it's meaning. Loved your poem...

Like an old, abandoned house, this poem is haunted - haunted by the years that have come and gone, haunted by the memories that linger in the dust. There is life, but it faintly stares through darkened windows. As an old house settling, it bemoans its years.

I admire the love you have for your father and am sorry that age and time have weighed so heavy upon your shoulders.

An aging body seems to betray the soul living inside it.....the mansion becomes a lean to and the repairman is unable to fix what is broken. Worse yet, the mind betrays the body.....and there is no escape. A powerful write...and it happens to so many every day. Lydi**

yes, "a lean to"----so true.

thank you, Lydi...

Getting older is no fun. Being able to look back at yourself at a younger age allows you to see the care-free abandon that goes along with the genetics of that age. All the more reason to be sad when that little/young guy is so, so, far behind.

Excellent writing Jacob.

It's a beautiful poem. I might be wrong, but the way interpret these verses is that the woman in the poem has lost her husband and there's no one left in that mansion. She has lived so long in that mansion only because of the memories she has made with her husband and maybe family. Now the mansion only brings her pain, worries and most of all tears. She cannot bear this pain anymore and rather leave this place and go and live her life in solitude, away from all the harsh realities. I loved it anyways ^^
