Lock Box

Lock Box

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Lock Box

you approached my heart

like it was walking on the boulevard

among street hustlers

there is always a price, for

a night of loving,

a month,

a year of hopeful engaging,

wispy dreams of forever wearing out their shoes

all the enticing smiles provoking the emotional wallet

to magically appear,

"how much?" he secrets to her,

"let's talk price, later" she confides

he takes her hand,

and they walk to the moon,

spend a short eternity in the back seat of a rising star

then suddenly, he wakes up in a dark sky

with an empty billfold,

and indifference locked away in an impenetrable vault

of wizened, cynical years.

There is a sad cynicism in this poem , Jacob. Is it better to have a little happiness fora short while, than no happiness at all? An empty wallet is still no substitute for an empty heart?
Your quiet words in this poem shout a poignant message.

thank you so much for your visit, norman...and i think a little happiness even for the shortest time.. read more
Yes there is always an emotional price paid for love, usually upfront, then enjoy the ride, then there after the ride, there is a bill leaving one angry, empty and sour! life insurance doesn't cover these losses of emotional investments to carry one into the future, you just suck it up all inside thinking how was I outplayed! then just to add insult to injury nothing comes free monetary speaking lol. It's a seesaw investment, ups and downs!! Nice work J.

hahaha...........amy!!!!!!!
I'm wandering about the tense 'you'?

I see a man falling for something he knew might come but was too naive and proud to admit his mistake in the end. How many men have been to the moon only to discover it was empty after all.

There's always an interesting story within your poems Jacob.

thank you for your words, Tim.

Life is wasted on the body's pleasures than on the soul's needs. The true bond between people is what lays within their hearts, the emotions which make us feel alive.
I really like this piece, thank you for sharing.
