walking away

walking away

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

walking away

comfortable shoes

blue news,

hush puppy lies i don't want to hear

deceased heels, she used to wear patent leather music

when her heart sung

and those soulful eyes, i would weak kneed become

she lashed me with her smile

me, in my comfortable shoes

heard the blue news

hush the voice laced with grief

when the telephone rang

the sad news it sang

now my sole is worn

from tears running in place

i still see her face, in the vinyl mirror

and the comfortable shoes

that sit idle in my closet

under the old jeans of memory

i no longer wear, either.

'Hush puppy lies I don't want to hear'

what a great line! Its like we become so comfortable we don't want to hear the realities of the truth. I can take this trip with you, memories folded up like clothes in the bottom drawer we no longer wear, but the song still strong in our hearts. beautiful Jacob~

There's something about comfortable shoes that lull us into a false sense of security as if all shoes should and will feel that way - then when the favourite comfortable ones are gone we are faced with the difficulties of brand new shoes.

Maybe you should get you some blue suede shoes, put on those old jeans and dance to a new tune. The best revenge is living it up and living well. There's comfort to be found in all sorts of places where wine flows more often than sorrows. And I've always preferred cool, red grapes to red eyes and hot, salty tears. But I still love my comfort...which is why I married my best friend.

The poet didn't let the heel walk all over him by stepping out a mighty fine pome.

"comfortable shoes

blue news"

Right away.. I saw it coming.. guess I traveled there and knew the scene too well.
Yeah. Guess I was too comfortable in those Moccasins i borrowed too.
Too much drama.. too many tears.... It's best walking away further then a mile bare foot then to keep walking in borrowed troubled moccasins.

I like the shoe image, the words that are frequently repeated. I think your poems have this almost cinematic character, it's just easy to imagine a setting, everything about it.

Sometimes, it's difficult to walk a mile in your own shoes.
Poignant and metaphorical, this piece eloquently announces that sad change has starkly arrived.
Haunting read.

Heart-rending. I love the line " she used to wear patent leather music" ... reminds me for some reason of the squeak of an ex's nurse shoes on some floors. It was so "her". Anyhow ... an excellent piece. ~Jim
