A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

formula and Burgundy-wise

i spilled wine on my bib

and burped up my past

you wiped my chin with your smile

but inside i grew smaller

couldn't get past the terrible two's

of what came before

i knew how to formulate words

enough to chew on their potential effect

before writing them down....

It's funny, but I am not getting rejection...or anything about romantic entanglement. I am getting two streams, diverse but harmonious...one the infant, older and wiser than his future self. The other the very aged man, tended to by one who remains steadfast in love, unable to articulate the newborn wisdom that has returned to him at the end of his life.
I like mine better!
And I love this poem. I am rapidly becoming one of your numerous devoted fans.

i appreciate your words and interpretation, softlyfall...

The first stanza is amazingly apt.
You seem to be blaming yourself for foolishly and painfully ending a relationship--or maybe, that's myself I see.
An excellent bit of work, Professor J!

I can feel a humiliating , gentle, but pathetic smile of rejection.
As though a love letter asking to get back together denied.

This can be a painful thing esp.for the Man. I suppose it would be very hard to ever forget.
Makes me feel bad for the other gender... I hope I didn't leave anyone scarred.

Yes indeed. You do this very well. Keep chewing, then write them down.

The way you can find the perfect metaphor for any situation puts me in awe of your talent. The bib, the terrible twos....yes, yes, yes.....you are a poet extraordinaire! Lydi**

The terrible twos of what came before suggests a memory of a path taken once, but never forgotten, and the ability to think of chewing down words before use sounds to me like knowing the war is coming and checking your ammunition.
Probably read a different tangent than what you meant Jacob, but enjoyed the words and images it conveyed in my mind.
