every one of us, including those governors who are refusing refuge to these poor souls only trying to escape terrorism and find a better life, should remember that we all have ancestors who did exactly the same thing.

Almost never has the American people been truly welcoming to the new immigrants. But the torch still burns. It burns even now, even though we might not notice it. Will it ignite a fire and destroy us, or will it ignite a fire and help us thrive. The kind of fire. That is I think the question underlying this poem. The torch is about to do work, but for which direction. We have no choice but to find out.
