the base of mediocrity

the base of mediocrity

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

the base of mediocrity

armored brick,

severed mortar of heart

we are no longer attached

to a vertical climb

heaven isn't waiting,

there is no Eden,

and we aren't running naked and laughing

the fig leaf fell from the tree

and exposed us for what we are

so this building is too flawed to stand tall

and our windows

have become so transparent

even the dullest blade

can easily scratch the glass effort

to pick up the stone branches

that now just protect themselves

from falling into a cellar

of contagious claustrophobia.

Mediocrity is where most of us live--and its comfortable; plenty of other people with which to share a compromising nature.
But, every now and then...
Insightful poetry!

a truly wonderful piece. you are so startlingly pot-on with your insights into human nature and the world in which we live.

our mediocrity breeds inertia, and you are the cheerleader on the sidelines, cheering us onward.

superb piece, my friend.

Your insight and wisdom about the world is amazing, Jacob. We are flawed....the world is. We are human and we can not be perfect. However, should be just accept this mediocrity? Your words are a call to arms for every socially conscious individual. Lydi**

Perhaps we are all, like Damocles, no more than a hair breadth away from realisation, but then again, perhaps we are less than that hair breadth away from oblivion.

Brilliantly insightful as ever. T

You're welcome
haunting, it has the sense of prophecy or a call to the listeners. There is a mix of both a feeling of defeat, an acceptance of the current overwhelming destitution, a loss of the innocence of hope, and at the same time this subtle urging to continue, to endure, "to pick up the stone branches that now just protect themselves."

clever, Jacob. I've read somewhere,
Mediocrity...is the default law of the universe. Unfortunately..once a person reaches a level of their highest potential...There. Is where they remain. Gosh, thinking about this makes me realize how much I hate my job...haha... great write. I always love your metaphors. They sharpen the mind.

Enigmatic in the extreme, this one, Jacob! Whether to do with personal or political relationships, this piece evokes only gloom....both for the individuals, the nations, or mankind, come to that. For me, it generates an overflowing can of worms about the evolution or regression of man....but I could be totally wrong. I usually am! P.
